City of Vienna's eating disorder initiative "S-O-Ess" goes USA
The City of Vienna's initiative "S-O-Ess" ranks among the top ten topics at an international conference on eating disorders to be held in the US later this year.
Eating disorders are a societal phenomenon of our times. Approximately 200,000 Austrians suffer from eating disorders. In the USA eating disorders affect nearly ten million people, for 50,000 of them they prove fatal. The International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED 08) will take place in Seattle (USA) from 15 to 17 May 2008. The City of Vienna’s initiative "S-O-Ess" has submitted the topic "Vienna initiative against unhealthy body perfection to combat eating disorders". I has been ranked among the top ten topics due to the initiative’s brand new approach. The City of Vienna will present the initiative "S-O-Ess" and its aims and measures at the conference in Seattle.
Aims
"S-O-Ess", an initiative by the Vienna Women’s Health Programme, aims to establish new healthy ideals and promotes the slogan "No BODY is perfect". The interdisciplinary cooperation between health experts and representatives from the fashion and advertising industries, media, business, show business and politics works towards correcting unrealistic and unhealthy ideals.
Yellow ribbon as symbol
"S-O-Ess" has created its own symbol in the form of a torn measuring tape, following the example of the red ribbon. A large number of Austrian celebrities support the initiative.
Academy for Eating Disorders
The renowned Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) organises the International Conference on Eating Disorders in Seattle. The AED is the largest global multidisciplinary professional organisation with more than 1,500 members. The Academy also publishes the renowned "International Journal of Eating Disorders" and has issued guidelines that call for a ban on the use of severely underweight models in fashion shows and in fashion magazines, and encourages the industry to adopt a minimum acceptable height-to-weight ratio.
The initiative "S-O-Ess" shares these goals and aims to establish global cooperation with international experts.
